What to Wear

Q: I want my family and I to look our best in the photographs, so what colours or styles work best for photoshoots?

A. If you are wanting to have a look where you all "match" and look quite casual, quite a nice thing to do is all wear jeans and simple pale or white t-shirts. It is a timeless look that isn't distracting and won't cause hysterical laughter and embarrassment in 10 years time (remember hypercolour and "choose life" t shirts?).

Generally the classics work best for most portraits. Try to avoid clashing colours, busy prints, and logos on t shirts which are distracting and take the attention away from the face. In a group portrait, coordination is fairly important. Stripes, checks, plaids and prints are confusing and do not photograph well. Solid colors are preferred.

There are a couple of other things to take into account as well, such as location. A beach location might call for flowing linen pants and dresses - especially good to catch movement and light. If the portrait is casual studio or on the beach, bare feet are fine too. Or you may be shooting against a black background and want a more sleek dramatic look, in which case a simple black or grey polo top and well cut pants will work beautifully.

The goal of any fine portrait is to direct the viewer’s attention to the face or faces in the portrait. Appropriately styled clothing allows the face to remain the focus of the portrait.

Turtlenecks or V-necks are flattering provided they are not exaggerated in style. Avoid particularly wide or deep V-neck garments, as well as bulky cowl neck sweaters that completely hide the neck. For adults, long sleeves are most flattering as bare arms call attention to themselves and will overpower the face.

If you wear glasses on a daily basis, we would recommend wearing them in your portrait.

Avoid wearing makeup heavier than usual. Makeup with a natural look will photograph better with today’s digital technology and if you have a pimple it is sometimes easier to take it out digitally afterwards than try to cover it with tonnes of make up).

Remember, the focus is on the person, not on clothing or jewellery! Very simple garments and accessories always photograph best.
